Integrative Community Therapy in Ukraina

We first got acquainted with this method in 2018 when Simon Greuter, Switzerland ( within the project “Healing of broken Communities in Eastern Ukraine”, on 12 and 14 June 2018 introduced the ICT method in two group sessions in Kyiv and Sievierodonetsk. The method found positive feedback from participants and on November 19-23, 2018 in the city of Sievierodonetsk the first basic training for future moderators was held.

During one year, there have been 5 five-day trainings for group moderators with approximately 100 participants. Today, many of them conduct regular groups with hundreds of residents in 8 regions of Ukraine: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Zaporizhia, Ternopil and Kyiv.

The ITC has very important elements and also becomes useful because it prohibits advice and judgement (which are so common in our culture) and because it revives folk traditions (such as songs, poems, dances, proverbs, jokes). In our work we use a short manual for group sessions, created by Ulrike Schaefer (Basel, Switzerland) for the use of moderators during ICT sessions. These materials (handbook, overview for moderators etc.) which comprising the 5 phases of the ICT method in 20 concise steps, exist, besides Russian, also in English and in Ukrainian languages. It is a really helpful tool for the work of ICT moderators.

We support the further development of the ICT community in Ukraine. At the end of 2019, group moderators and stakeholders have formed the Ukrainian Network for the Development of ICT. The aims of this Network are the provision of continuous training, the promotion of ICT practice and the inclusion of the people from different regions to participate in ICT groups. Also, we are interested in conducting research that would address the evidence to use ICT in our country.
